In the same way that different dishes should be experienced when travelling to foreign parts, beverages are often synonymous with a specific destination. On the tropical island of Mauritius there are a quite a few tasty drinks you should sample in order to fully absorb the relaxed island vibes. So raise your glass and say, ‘Cheers!’ with our choice of top four drinks to try in Mauritius.

1. Aloudah

The Mauritian equivalent to falooda (which has been spread by Indian migrants to all corners of the globe), alouda is a sweet milky beverage filled with gooey tapioca balls that comes in a variety of flavours (like strawberry, vanilla and rose). An interesting mix between Asian bubble tea and a milkshake, aloodah is a refreshing treat on a hot Mauritian day.

Must try Don’t pass up on the opportunity to sample the aloodah from the Port Louis food market.

2. Tea

There’s nothing quite like a relaxing cup of tea to calm the mind. First brought to the island by the French in the mid-18th Century, Mauritians take their tea very seriously. Take a tea tour of Bois Cheri tea plantation and marvel at the rolling expanse of lush plantations, then visit the estate’s 150-year-old colonial house (now a museum) to learn how this important export helped shaped this nation.

Must try Bois Chéri vanilla flavoured tea is to die for! They also produce a wonderful range of other flavours, plus green and herbal varieties.

Tid bit Did you know that all tea (green, black, oolong) comes from the exact same plant. External factors like terroir and altitude affect the flavour, plus the leaves are harvested from different parts of the plant which affects the flavour.

3. Rum

After a hard day of chilling on the beach or exploring the island’s many treasures, you deserve something a tad stronger than tea! Dutch colonialists planted the first sugar cane over 300 years ago and a little time afterwards a clever man decided to produce rum. The rum here is great (they’ve had a lot of practice) and Mauritius boasts six distilleries. Three of these make authentic agricole rum made from sugar cane juice (instead of molasses).

Must try Award-winning Rhumerie de Chamarel creates double-distilled, oak-aged rum. It’s also worth visiting St Aubin and Chateau Labourdonnais for the next best.

Tid bit Some Mauritian rums are infused with various flavours, such as citrus fruit, spices, vanilla and kumquat (these tend to be sweeter).

4. Beer

Cheers the setting sun with a crisp Phoenix beer, a popular local lager brewed on the island.

Must try For a stronger lager-style Phoenix brew, try the Blue Marlin or the Special Brew.

If you’d like to find out about Mauritian cuisine, we’ve got you covered!

While you may think of it as a romantic destination, and it most certainly is, Mauritius isn’t just a honeymoon spot. It has everything needed for a fantastic family holiday. Mauritius caters for all age groups and has a wide range of activities to enjoy as a family. These are 3 top family travel tips to help you plan your perfect family getaway.

1. Where to Stay

There’s a nice family holiday balance between doing things together and still being able to do some things apart. It is more likely to happen when you pick the right spot to have your family vacation. Hotels that are kid-mindful, have onsite activities and organised excursions, provide excellent opportunities to create happy family holiday memories.

Ideally, your hotel also needs to have a kid’s club and a child-minding service. This gives you the opportunity to get dressed up and have a quiet meal with your partner. Or do something that the kids aren’t keen to do, but you’ve always wanted to try, like deep-sea fishing. They’ll have a great time keeping busy doing fun activities, with other kids, and you’ll know they are being looked after. Then at the end of the day, you’ll get to hear about each other’s adventures.

5 Family Friendly Hotels

2. Check for Special Kids’ Rates

Finding ways to save on flights and accommodation, enables you to have a bit more to spend on creating memories. There are plenty of ways you can save and still have a great family vacation. So, it’s well worth doing a bit of asking about things before you make your final decisions.

Usually, kids don’t pay full airfare rates. Discounts can range from 90% to 25% off a ticket depending on how old the child is. Also check if there are any specials running and if your family can take advantage of them.

Likewise, hotels offer discounts. It’s often cheaper to book a family room or suite. Or add a kid’s bed into a room, rather than pay for an additional room. Remember, a Mauritian holiday is going to be spent mostly outside and doing things. So practically everyone having a comfy spot to sleep in, rather than their own room, might be what you want.

3. What to Do

When you holiday in Mauritius, beaches, estuaries, lagoons, volcanic lakes, forests and botanical gardens are all waiting to be explored. Mauritius really does spoil its holiday makers when it comes to activity choices. And many of the kid-friendly activities are ones you’d like to do yourself.

Holidaying in Mauritius gives You the Chance to Cherry Pick what Your Family Most Wants to Do

10 Adventures Waiting for You…

There are an endless number of water sports to enjoy while you are in Mauritius. From parasailing, to surfing, water-skiing, snorkelling and diving. Here are 4 family favorites:

2. Glass-Bottom Boats are a chance to discover the abundant Mauritian sea life in its marine park. Many include opportunities to snorkel as part of a trip’s package.

3. Submarine Tours take you 32m under the sea to see shipwrecks, coral reefs and a fascinating array of tropical marine life. Enjoy a close up look at moray eels, turtles, brightly coloured fish, sharks and octopus.

Depending on the route you choose, you could zip past waterfalls and over the 23-coloured earth geopark as you enjoy the breath-taking scenery.

6. Chamarel Adventure Park offers Canopy Walks through the treetops and a Forest Adventure Course with nets and beams for the more daring.

7. Black River Gorges National Park extends for over 6000 hectares with a dense green Rainforest to Explore. It’s home to unique plants and animals, like the Mauritius flying fox and Mauritius cuckoo-shrike. You can Hike 50kms of trails and enjoy rolling hills with spectacular views. If your family is keen to Climb, Abseil or do some Canyoning then this is a great park to visit.

…With Animals

National parks, forests and beaches all provide opportunities to spot animals. Then there are also dedicated places, where you’re guaranteed a closer encounter with some animals. Here are two of them.

8. La Vanille Nature Park has beady-eyed crocs, giant tortoises and monkeys as well as a host of other fun critters.

Mauritius is a mix of cultures and has an eclectic history. Originally it was uninhabited and the spot where Dodos lived peacefully. Then the British, Dutch and French colonialists arrived, bringing with them Malagasy (Madagascan) slaves. Chinese traders sailed through the Mauritian waters and indentured Indian labourers were brought to the island. And everyone had a part in influencing Mauritian cuisine.
Mauritian food is all about tucking into a myriad of flavours. With influences from across the world, this subtropical island is a venerable melting pot of tastes. Here’s why choosing what to eat is going to convince you that you need another Mauritian trip as soon as possible.

Europe

The Dutch, British and French colonists brought European cooking techniques to this subtropical island during the 16th to 19th centuries. Local bakeries and cafes reflect their influence through their freshly baked breads and pastries.

While exploring Mauritius, enjoy traditionally made croissants and snack on the ever-popular Mauritian Poulet au Pain (chicken rolls). Appreciate your baked goods along with some black vanilla tea, made on the island at the Bois Cheri tea estate.

Madagascar

In the 1600s the Dutch brought slaves from Madagascar. They intended them as labour for the industries they were setting up. The Madagascans introduced Creole cooking to the Mauritius food menu. And their legacy can be enjoyed in non-spicy curries and tasty stews, such as tomato-based Rougaille.

Don’t leave Mauritius without trying a Tomayto. It couldn’t be more different from what you imagine it is. Surprisingly it’s not a tomato dish. It’s actually a grated coconut cookie. And quite delicious too!

India

The end of slavery, in 1835, brought approximately 500 000 indentured labourers from India to work the island’s sugarcane fields. Of all the flavour influences, traditional Indian cooking has left the largest impact on Mauritian cooking.

The Indian people brought with them the culinary styles and techniques of their homeland. Then adapted them with the ingredients that were available to them. This resulted in mouth watering dishes, like the Dholl Puri. Dholl Puri is widely regarded as Mauritius’s national dish. It’s a thin fried bread, similar to a pancake, filled with curried yellow lentils and available everywhere. You’ll find it at street vendor stalls, in mobile kitchens and sold off the back of motor bikes as well as in restaurants.

Treat yourself and visit the Central Market in Port Louis for a Mauritian food stroll. Wander around the market as you sample the masala chicken kebabs, biryani, curried samosas and manioc goujons. For dessert, round off your cuisine meander by trying the sugary and buttery Indian sweets called Mithai.

China

Some Chinese people were brought to Mauritius as indentured labourers, while others came later as traders. These people mostly came from China’s southern regions. With them they brought Cantonese style cuisine.

Experience this style of Mauritian cooking when you try Mine Frites. The best are found in ChinaTown. Mine Frites is a simple and tasty fried noodle dish accompanied with soy sauce, spring onions and chilli. Mauritians also make their own type of Dim Sum called Boulet. These steamed, bite-sized dumplings are stuffed with prawns, fish or chou chou (a local vegetable). Then served in a salty fish broth with lots of chilli. Which is just Delish!

5 Mauritian Favourites

1. Seafood

Seafood in Mauritius is exceptional. And widely available. Is your preference seafood that’s been baked, grilled, fried, stewed, steamed, sauteed or raw with lemon juice? You can literally find seafood prepared any which way you want it and flavoured with influences from China, Italy, Madagascar or India.

The seafood variety includes lobster, calamari, crab, oysters, smoked marlin and for those who feel adventurous, sea urchins. A traditional seafood dish that’s not to be missed is Fish Vindaye. It’s fried pickled fish that’s served in a wonderfully flavoursome sauce made from onion, garlic, ginger, turmeric and mustard seeds.

2. Bol Renverser (The upside-down bowl)

This fun and yummy Mauritian dish involves layering stir fried vegetables, chicken or prawn, rice and sauces in a bowl. The bowl is then turned upside down and a fried egg is placed on top before serving it.

3. A Twist on Fruit Salad

It’s taken for granted that you’ll have a choice of tropical fruits when you explore Mauritian cuisine. However, if you are thinking of traditional fruit salad, then it’s time for a change. Mauritian fruit salads include all the usual pineapple, guava, apple, mango… Where things get interesting is the addition of cucumber, sprinkles of chilli salt and a tangy tamarind sauce.

4. Gato Coco

This sweet coconut cake can be found in various colours and shapes as well as flavours. Keep an eye out for them when you pass by patisseries or corner stores. They are available throughout Mauritius.

5. Mazavaroo

Locals are crazy about chillies. They add it to everything they can; including fruit. For example, unripe mango and Victoria pineapples. Mazavaroo comes as a chilli paste. It’s included as a condiment throughout the island and used prolifically to add a bit of extra fire to Mauritian food. Mazavaroo also makes an excellent souvenir or gift for someone back home.

Mauritius has a Whole World of Flavour Waiting for You to Enjoy!

Mauritius is a subtropical island paradise and just a short flight from South Africa. It boasts a wide range of nature activities that you can do by yourself, with a friend or as a family. If you’re considering what to do when you’re out and about on your Mauritius holiday, then take a look at these 5 Nature Activities.

1. Gorgeous Beaches

Think silky, white sand. Glittering in the sunlight and inviting you to sink your bare feet into it. Then to stretch out on a towel and watch the waves.

If you are looking for a gorgeous sunrise over the sea then head to one of Mauritius’s East Coast beaches. Grand Gaube beach offers you the opportunity to watch fishermen come back from their overnight fishing while you enjoy the dawn. If you want a bit more solitude while you watch the sky’s changing colours, then go further south to Pointe D’Esny Beach.

Trou aux Biches Beach is on the North-West Coast. It’s one of the most spectacular and romantic places to enjoy a sunset. Add a picnic into the mix and you have the perfect setting to watch the last slice of sun dissolve into the ocean.

For a lovely long beach walk, check out Le Morne Beach. It meanders along the aqua blue sea on the one side and the Le Morne Mountains on the other. You can walk for more than 3km while you soak in the tranquillity of being enveloped by nature.

2. Garden of Eden

Explore the Sir Seewoosagur Botanic Garden, it’s close to Port-Louis and promises to be time well spent. The garden is home to plenty of weird and wonderful plants just waiting for you to discover. The palm tree collection alone has 85 different varieties and the long pond has spectacular giant water lilies. While it’s a lovely place to walk around alone, it’s highly recommended to use the services of a guide. They will give you insight into some of the plants’ fascinating medical uses and teach you about harvesting spices.

3. The 7 Shifting Sands

When you see this wonder for the first time, you’ll be forgiven if you think you’ve left earth! The Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths is a small slice of dune in the island’s South-West region. It’s where you’ll discover the wonders of seven distinct colours of sand. These red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow sands are caused by naturally occurring chemicals in the earth. Even more fascinating, is that the sands will eventually settle into colour-coded layers if you mix them up. This attraction is best viewed early in the morning.

4. Exploring Under the Sea in a Submarine

Try book this adventure for a calmer, sunny day. Take a submarine tour 32 metres below the Mauritian Ocean’s surface. You are guaranteed to be held captive by the eccentric landscape of shipwrecks and coral reefs. This is a great family activity and a fascinating introduction to the island’s marine life. You could see Moray eels, turtles, brightly-coloured fish and octopus to name just a few.

5. A Volcano Crater Lake

Ganga Talao is also known as Grand Bassin. It is a volcano crater lake in the heart of Mauritius that rises 550m above sea level. For the island’s Hindus it’s a pilgrimage site used to meditate, chant, pray and make offerings. As such the area is dotted with statues and temples. It’s believed that the water is the same as that from the sacred River Ganges in India. You can also get up close and personal with local monkeys and walk along the lakeside while you take in stunning views.

A Mauritian island holiday gives you the opportunity to enjoy more than just a swim in tranquil warm waters. Mauritius water sports are plentiful for those who’re keen to learn something new or dip back into something enjoyed before. Here are 6 Water Sports to tempt you to play in Mauritius’s gorgeous tropical waters!

1. Scuba diving

Mauritius ocean temperatures range from 21 – 28’C. This makes them perfect for comfortable longer dives, with a great variety of things to see. Mauritius boasts a vast variety of dive sites from natural coral reefs to a marine park and about 22 wrecks. Both novices and professionals will enjoy the great visibility and colourful marine life. People travel all over the world to dive in Mauritius. Safety is paramount so you’ll need to qualify as a Padi or SSI diver before or during your holiday.

2. Sea Walk

No time to qualify for your scuba licence? Or still a little weary? Then an Underwater Sea Walk is a great opportunity to explore the reefs and find sea creatures without a diving licence. One of the most popular options is the Underwater Sea Walk in Grand Bai. Hop on a boat to go to a platform inside the lagoon, North of Grand Bai, and gear up. You’ll be kitted out in a transparent helmet, much like those worn by astronauts, with your own air supply. This setup makes it easy to breathe, as it’s pretty much the same as how you normally breathe. A great upside to this is it doesn’t require you to master a snorkel setup before you start exploring. A knowledgeable guide will go down with you and point out the wonders of coral and colourful sea creatures.

3. Parasailing

This daring activity is great for couples or as a lovely way to have the sky to yourself. It’s offered on the North and Eastern coastline of Mauritius. Launch into the air with the help of a great support team. Then parasail for up to 20 minutes as you enjoy spectacular views over the lagoons and beaches of the island.

4. Sea kayaking

Choose between a number of different sea kayaking excursions to experience the natural environment of this Indian Ocean Island. Explore the smaller tropical islands that dot the sea off the mainland. Paddle through mangrove swamps and listen to the call of brightly coloured birds. Step out of your kayak and learn a bit about plant life, while you meander along forest trails and explore fascinating ruins.

Another option, on the West Coast, is to spend the day paddling through the Albion caves. These particular excursions will take you to Mauritius’s most stunning locales. Excursions tend to place emphasis on a safe and educational experience. They aim to leave you enriched and even more in love with this island paradise.

5. Surfing

Surfing is an absolute treat in Mauritius. There are plenty of great opportunities to find that much sought after sweet-spot. It’s particularly good to surf during the June, July and August months.

The ultimate surfing spot is Le Morne Beach. It’s nestled under the Le Morne Mountains and stretches for over 3kms. If you’re keen to learn to surf, then head over to Tamarin Bay. Black Rocks or Ilot Sancho are favourite spots amongst the more experienced surfers. Although, check with the locals for an update on currents and the possibility of a shark joining you.

6. Sea Hover

If you’re keen for an adrenaline rush, then head to the island’s West or South-West Coasts and jump onto a sea hover. After a safety and training briefing, your instructor will lead the way at thrilling speeds. Taking you to explore the coastlines and see gorgeous spots, such as those in the West Coast lagoons. Sea Hovering also gives you the chance to enjoy sea views of Rempart and Le Morne Mountains, the Black River Mountain range and the gorgeous Le Morne Peninsula.

Choosing an Ethical Wildlife Encounter

Mauritius offers interactive adventures and wildlife tours. Mauritius offers you the chance to see dolphins, turtles, crocodiles, lemurs, crocodiles, giant tortoises and skinks to name a few. The wonder of encountering, watching them close up and sometimes even an animal can be a treasured life experience.
As with anywhere in the world, some operators are better than others at ensuring the protection of animals. Some animals cannot be touched without hurting them and wild animals should never be herded into smaller areas or trapped. Therefore, ahead of booking a tour, we recommend that you do a quick check on how a company enables animal interactions. An easy way to do this is to read reviews and look at the photos from tours others have taken. Additionally, you can look at the company’s social media pages and look at their affiliations or licences on their website. This will give you an idea of what the official company approach is and how well they actually uphold it.

What could be better than a tropical island paradise, surrounded by the warm waters of the south-west Indian Ocean? Add beautiful beaches, staggering natural beauty, great food and you’ve got all the makings of a fantastic holiday.

So, when’s the best time to have your holiday? For the most part Mauritius’s weather is ideal for holiday makers. Depending on what you’re keen to get up to, there are certain times of the year which might suit you best. Here’s the inside scoop on the Mauritius Weather.

Coastal vs Inland Climate

There’s generally about a 5’C difference in temperature between coastal areas and the island’s central plateau region. Coastal areas tend to be warmer with less rain than inland. In contrast, you can expect the central plateau to be cooler and more humid than the coastline. The north and west coasts are warmer as well as drier than the south and east coastlines.

When to Visit Mauritius

One of the many great things about holidaying in Mauritius is the weather. The weather tends to be ideal with the exception of a short stretch of wet season. Even then the wet season has its own appeal. Essentially, this means the timing of your Mauritius holiday can easily accommodate the realities of work schedules and school holidays.

Most people regard May to December as being the best time to visit Mauritius. The weather is comfortably warm and while you may experience some scattered showers, they tend to clear up quickly. The months you’ll want to double-think are January to April. This is when temperatures are inclined to be higher and cyclones may occur. Although most storms tend to miss the island and there are less tourists, which results in some great holiday deals.

Mauritius Summer

During the summer months of November to April, Mauritius’s weather is usually warm and humid. Interior temperatures range average between 20’C to 28’C, and along the coast you can expect it to reach into the 30’s. Peak temperatures can be expected between December and February.

The Wet Season

January through to May is regarded as the Mauritius wet season. It is most noticeable in the central plateau, with fairer conditions along the coastal areas. During this time the south and south-east coastlines are hit by prevailing trade winds. The result is nearly twice as much rainfall compared to the north and north-west coastlines.

However, it’s worth remembering that, in the rainy season, it could be raining where you’re staying but a couple of kms away the sun’s out. So, you might pack an umbrella but you can still head to the beach with your hat, costume and sunscreen.

Cyclone Season

For the most part storms miss the Mauritian islands. However, it is worth noting that January to March is still regarded as the cyclone season.

Gusty Wind

Unless you particularly enjoy gusty winds, it’s best to avoid the east coast in July and August. This is when the wind is at its strongest in this particular area.

Wintering in Mauritius

The winter months of May to October are regarded by many as the best time to visit Mauritius. This is because the temperatures are moderate and range between 20 – 24’C. The lowest temperatures can be expected in August. Which could mean that it drops a little further down from 20’C to 18’C.
During winter it’s particularly lovely to explore Mauritius beaches and nearby islands or go look for wildlife. It’s also a great time for surfing and water sport enthusiasts.

Which months to go if You want to….

Dive and Deep-Sea Fish

If you’re looking for the ideal time to book a diving or deep-sea fishing holiday, then look at going between December and March. This is when the water is clearest.

Go Surfing

There are plenty of tempting surfing spots when it comes to finding a wave to ride in Mauritius. It’s particularly good to surf during the June, July and August months.

Le Morne Beach is known as the ultimate surfing beach in Mauritius. It’s in the shadow of the Le Morne mountains and the beachfront stretches for over 3kms. Many people comment on the especially breath-taking ocean colours along the Le Morne Beach.

If you are learning to surf then head over to Tamarin Bay. As Tamarin bay has less resorts, it’s also a favoured surfing spot amongst more experienced surfers.

Experienced surfers that are looking for good waves can head to Black Rocks or Ilot Sancho. Although, if you do this check with the locals before you paddle out. There are sometimes sharks in at Black Rocks and strong currents off the Ilot Sancho coastline.

As we don’t control the Mauritius Weather
This is a Guideline to help you choose when to Holiday in Mauritius.
